| What is Gadolinium ?
Gadolinium is an FDA-approved contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). What are Gadolinium Based Contrast Agents?
Gadolinium-based contrast agents are often used to improve the visibility of internal structures when patients undergo an MRI or MRA. These gadolinium based contrast agents are injected into veins of the patient so that the physician can view a clear and detailed picture of a patient's internal organs, tissues, bones and/or vessels.
Five gadolinium-based contrast agents have been approved for use in the United States:
- Magnevist (gadopentetate dimeglumine)
- Omniscan (gadodiamide)
- OptiMARK (gadoversetamide)
- MultiHance (gadobenate dimeglumine)
- Prohance (gadoteridol)
Common Gadolinium Side Effects may include:
- Mild headache
- Low Blood Pressure
- Lightheadedness
- Nausea
- Pain or burning at injection site
- Gadolinium can cause irritation to the vein where the injected occurred;

Allergic Reactions to Gadolinium Based MRI Contrast Dye

Serious Side Effects of Gadolinium
As stated above the worst side effect or complication of gadolinium is development of Nephrogenic Systemic Fibrosis (NSF) or Nephrogenic Fibrosing Dermopathy (NFD). NSF/NFD are progressive diseases that has no cure and no consistently effective treatment. It is painful, extremely debilitating, and sometimes deadly. According to recent studies, these serious gadolinium symptoms that may later be diagnosed as NSF or NFD can develop within several days of using gadolinium exposure, but can take up to 18 months for the NSF symptoms or NFD symptoms to appear.
